The fact that the MCU is placing Kang The Conqueror as the main villain in a movie that leads right into its version of Secret Wars makes the next two Avengers films more difficult to predict. In the comics, Kang is not the main character in either version of Secret Wars. Another interesting possibility is to have another Marvel villain, most likely Doctor Doom, take on the role of the main antagonist after the Avengers succeed against Kang in The Kang Dynasty. There are several versions of Kang, and another, much more powerful and dangerous, could rise following the events of The Kang Dynasty. Defeating a version of Kang could set up an Incursion, similar to the one that Earth-838 risked while trying to defeat Thanos, leading right into the MCU’s version of Secret Wars. One interesting way for The Kang Dynasty to flip what was done in Infinity War is to have the Avengers win against a version of Kang, only to realize that they allowed for a much bigger problem to happen. In a way, Infinity War was the only marketing campaign Endgame needed. How the few remaining Avengers would defeat Thanos was also a huge question leading up to Endgame, and the prospect of a time travel plot that could reverse things made the movie sound much more interesting. Thanos had been able to outsmart and defeat most of the Avengers in Infinity War, which also had to do with the Avengers being split after Civil War. In addition, it was clear Endgame would see the death of some Avengers, which created a sense of urgency and made audiences eager to see the movie as soon as they could. While audiences could anticipate that the snapped Avengers would return, the real question was how that would happen. Infinity War ended with Thanos winning, a shocking plot twist that saw a half of the entire universe, including several Avengers, being erased. While Endgame’s box office is far more impressive than Infinity War’s, the latter’s ending is the main reason why the former did so well, even more so in terms of opening weekend.
